Set up after the marriage between Richard Fontaine and Gagnard Delagrange in 1985, Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard has since been producing excellent Chardonnays and nowadays is still a name that is “under-the-radar” but attracts lots of wine collectors to secure it during En Primeur. The Domaine has beautiful ownership in Chassagne-Montrachet with a few Premier Crus as well as Batard-Montrachet and Le Montrachet Grand Cru. Winemaking remains traditional in the cellar, creating intense, powerful and complex wines that are classically balanced with genuine expressions of the terroirs.
Among the fantastic line-up, Fontaine-Gagnard ‘s Batard-Montrachet and Criots-Bâtard-MontrachetGrand Cru offer extraordinary values for drinkers who are looking at classic style of top-tier Chardonnay from Burgundy. They remain very well-priced against the other producers in the market. The production are minuscule as well, Batard-Montrachet comes from a 0.3 hectare of vines lying on the Chassagne-Montrachet side, and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is compiled from 3 separate parcels of vines that are now 100 years of age and aggregate pnlu 0.33 hectare of vines.

A cooler and very pure nose freely offers up its aromas of spice, various citrus elements and ripe white fleshed fruit, in particular white peach. The delicious, intense and beautifully textured medium weight plus flavors possess focused power and fine detail on the balanced and strikingly long finish. This is a Bâtard of finesse and understated rather than overt muscle and imposing size and weight.

Like the La Romanée, this too flirts with hints of exotic on the white and yellow fruit, passion fruit and jasmine tea aromas. The caressing and seductively textured bigger-bodied flavors possess good power on the lemony, very dry and impressively lengthy finish. I would add that this too is rather tightly wound, and I would advise holding it for at least 5 years first.

This is also elegant and pure and is presently quite similar to the Criots with perhaps just a bit more citrus influence. Once again, the larger-scaled flavors possess a simply gorgeous mouthfeel with excellent size, weight and density to the lemony, bone-dry and youthfully austere finale. This is very classy and while it could use better depth, given the potential aging curve, it should have no trouble adding more with time in bottle.

This is also wonderfully pure and, contrary to most vintages, currently displays no exoticism on the highly spiced white orchard fruit aromas. Once again there is a really lovely mouthfeel to the succulent yet sleek medium weight plus flavors that culminate in a hugely persistent finish. This is potential the best Fontaine Criots in a number of years.
