A Serious Wine Collector's Dream! Old Vintage Henri Jayer Richebourg Grand Cru

November 4, 2019

Considered by many to be the godfather of Burgundy wines, Henri Jayer was an innovator and pioneer in the wine industry and had spent over 50 years to build up his empire. He first started making wines with his father in 1939 at the age of 17; and by the time he was 23, he entered into an agreement with Madame Noirot-Camuzet to look after her vineyards during the war in return for half of the grape harvest. It was not until 1951 that Henri released Burgundy wines under his own label, at the very mere age of 29 years old. He acquired plots of land for his own production, reaching a total of approx. 80 hectares. From then on, he adopted forward-thinking practices such as eschewing filtration and destemming his harvest before maceration, which few other Burgundy winemakers had adopted at the time. He had become a great influence over younger wine growers in the region, in which some even consider him the "dean" of Burgundy winemaking. Renowned winemakers we know nowadays such as Jean-Nicolas Méo from Domaine Meo Camuzet, Claude Dugat, Jean-Yves Bizot, etc all had various degrees of apprenticeship from Henri.

In 1996, he passed his vineyards to his nephew Emmanuel Rouget but remained actively involved in the production until 2001 when he officially retired. Henri Jayer passed the responsibility of his vineyards and Domaine to Jean-Nicolas Méo and his nephew, Emmanuel Rouget, so the wines do not appear under the Jayer label from 2002 onwards. In September 2006, Henri Jayer passed away at the age of 84 years old.

All of Henri Jayer's wines have long been demanding high prices and his Richebourg wines were ranked as the most expensive wine in the world on Wine-searcher in 2012; however, his Richebourg productions have become so rare nowadays that they are even unable to gather enough data to determine where it ranks on the list and we dare to say it is impossible to find in the open market.

Today we are proud to be able to offer a few of Henri Jayer's old vintage Richebourgs from an experienced wine collector in Hong Kong who we have been in close relationship with over the past few years. He purchased these wines from a reputable merchant in UK 10 years ago and have remained unmoved in his Hong Kong wine cellar ever since -
