Way back in 1443, the iconic polychromatic-tiled Hôtel-Dieu (Hospices de Beaune) in central Beaune was built to take care of the sick, and ever since Guillemette Levernier made the first gift of vineyards to them in 1457, this tradition has continued for five centuries. The estate currently has around 60 hectares which the majority are used for Pinot Noir production, with the rest used for Chardonnay in which around 85% are premier crus and grand crus. They have entrusted 22 winemakers to produce wines and sell the their productions at an auction on every third Sunday of November, and is now probably the most famous wine charity auction in the world. All proceeds are invested back into the hospital and to conserve the beautiful Hôtel Dieu.
When an iconic name is met with a sophisticated estate like Albert Bichot, great wines are guaranteed. Hospices de Beaune owns a very small vineyard in Corton-Charlemagne, with merely 0.48 hectares located on the uphill of Le Charlemagne. 58% of the vines are dated from a planting in 1944, with 27% from 1981 and the rest from 1998.
We are glad to have secured a parcel produced by Albert Bichot and they are expected to arrive mid of next week. Stepping into its prime drinking window, it remains fairly-priced against rivals in this very top-tier of white Burgundy. This is a perfect example and worth taking up as much as possible -
