Higher-scored than Leroy's Chambertin - Trapet Chambertin 2014, 95-97pts, only HK$2,200/bt

August 15, 2017

Domaine Trapet is run by Jean-Louis Trapet, who married Andree from Alsace, and though they produce some nice Riesling in Alsace, majority of their production is focused in Gevrey-Chambertin. The domaine has been applying full biodynamic practices since mid-1990s. Jean-Louis Trapet carries out partial destemming and undergoes cold and long fermentation, always achieving great balance between oakiness and fruitiness, making their wines round and smooth - enjoyable when young and, for their top wine such as Le Chambertin, even more with further aging.

They have made a remarkable Le Chambertin from the vintage 2014, 95 Pts from Allen Meadows and 95-97 pts from Neal Martin. This is a lovely Chambertin that would be definitely great to enjoy by itself or paired with some nice red meats.

Because of the beauty of this wine and the high scores from critics, it is not easy to find in the market. We are happy today to be able to offer a nice parcel.  Priced only at 20% of Armand Rousseau and about 5% of Leroy, we are not shy to say this is a terrific price for a wine of this quality.

Domaine Trapet Le Chambertin 2014

HK$2,200 per bottle (only 12 bottles available)

94 – 97 pts Neal Martin

The 2014 Chambertin Grand Cru comes from three parcels of vine, the oldest planted way back in 1919. This vintage includes whole bunch fruit and sees around 50% new oak. It is bridled with a sense of grandeur on the nose as those luscious and mineral-laden black fruit march out from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin, and tightly wound blackberry and blueberry fruit that frame the precise, focused finish. You know, this may well be the finest Chambertin that I have ever tasted from Trapet.

95 pts Allen Meadows

This possesses an intensely floral nose with its equally cool and restrained array of rose, lavender and violet scents that add elegance to the distinctly spicy and earthy red and dark berry fruit scents that are also tinged by herbal tea nuances. There is excellent volume to the fleshy yet well-detailed and explicitly powerful big-bodied flavors that exhibit excellent power on the palate staining and hugely long finish. This intensely mineral-driven effort is most impressive but again note well that I would recommend buying this only if you have the requisite patience to cellar it accordingly as it's absolutely going to need it. As an aside it's going to be very interesting to see over time which wine among these three grands crus is ultimately the most interesting.
