High-Scoring, Ready-to-Drink Etienne Sauzet Batard-Montrachet 2007, 2010 & 2011

June 18, 2019

The son-in-law of Etienne Sauzet, Gérard Boudot, started managing the 12-hectare Domaine since 1975 and now manages it together with his daughter Emilie and her husband Benoit Riffault. Gérard Boudot makes their wines with appropriate migration with oak, and their 1er Crus and Grand Crus are usually kept in oak barrels for 18 months. Etienne Sauzet’s wines often achieve great balance given the complexity of the wines and produce refined Chardonnay with weight and volume for aging.

Among the line-up of the wines, Etienne Sauzet has outstanding achievements from Batard-Montrachet - one of the top Grand Crus among all Burgundy Chardonnay. Nowadays their Batard-Montrachet wines retain affordable pricing. Recently added into stock and expected to arrive in a week or so, we are delighted to offer the following fantastic-scored and ready-to-drink Batard-Montrachet at excellent prices -

2011 Etienne Sauzet Batard Montrachet Grand Cru

HK$2,900 per bottle (from OWC3, loose bottles available)

96 pts Antonio Galloni

Gently spiced notes open into lemon oil and subtle yellow stone fruits in the 2011 Batard-Montrachet. The style is surprisingly weightless for Batard, in fact, this is one of the more refined, introspective 2011 Batards I tasted. The long, persistent finish along is striking. There is no shortage of nuance or finesse in this exceptional wine from Sauzet.

2010 Etienne Sauzet Batard Montrachet Grand Cru

HK$3,300 per bottle (from OWC3, loose bottles available)

93-96 pts Allen Meadows “Don’t Miss!”

As is typically the case this is slightly riper than the Bienvenues with a pretty and densely fruited nose of white peach, pear, acacia blossom and background hints of citrus and toast. As is also typical, this large-scaled, intense, concentrated and overtly powerful effort is clearly bigger, richer and more imposing than its grand cru partner. The complexity is simply fantastic as is the persistence of the palate staining finish. While I usually am more impressed by finesse and refinement than power as it's much harder to achieve, the extra depth and stunning length of the Bâtard gives it the nod in 2010. Note that this is also bone dry and will need every bit of 12 to 15 years to arrive at its apogee. In a word, wow.

2007 Etienne Sauzet Batard Montrachet Grand Cru

HK$5,100 per magnum 1.5L (from OWC3, loose bottles available)

95pts Allen Meadows

While there is a touch of secondary development in evidence there is still impressive freshness to the elegant, restrained and pure aromas of white flower, fresh citrus peel and a mix of pear scents. There is outstanding intensity to the rich, full-bodied and focused medium weight plus flavors that retain a lovely sense of delineation that continues onto the balanced, explosive and gorgeously long finish. This is really most impressive and while it could certainly be enjoyed now I would be inclined to hold the '07 Bâtard for a few more years first and then drink over the next decade. Tasted twice this year with consistent notes.
