“Like Cournut himself, his wines seem full of nervous energy and fearlessly winning to go their own distinctive ways.” - David Schildknecht, Vinous
With an incredible, historic property built in the 15th century, the Cournut family owns around 15 hectares of vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet. The domaine is currently run by Jean-Pierre Cournet, who has done a lot of improvements such as lowering the yields, keeping up the age of vines to retain intense juices for vilification. Jean-Pierre is also eager to imply new oak to his wines, in which he uses 100% new oak for the domaine’s top line Batard-Montrachet and sometimes also for La Romanee and Dents de Chien.
The wines from Chateau de la Maltroye are very distinctive for its immense concentration. They are delicious even when they are young but also built for long aging. We love the richness of their wines having so much to tell from nose to palate.
We couldn't resist pulling out a bottle of Chassagne Montrachet Les Grandes Ruchottes 1er Cru 2016 to taste immediately when it landed and this really wowed us with its superb quality. This is the highest-scoring wine from Vinous’ Stephen Tanzer after he tasted 8 wines from Chateau de la Maltroye in Sep 2018, and awarded it with 93+ points and said that this is ”very stylish, fine-grained wine really exploded with aeration, revealing terrific breadth and volume”.

(Jean-Pierre Cournut picked these vines on the first day of his harvest): Bright medium yellow. Highly nuanced nose hints at citrus zest, minerals and honeysuckle. Initially quite tight in the mouth, with its saline flavors of white stone fruits and crushed rock sharpened and extended by brisk lemony acidity. But this very stylish, fine-grained wine really exploded with aeration, revealing terrific breadth and volume yet finishing with an impression of weightlessness to its rising, palate-staining flavors of citrus zest and stone. This wine should be long-lived in the context of the vintage.

(just one and a half barrels produced from vines planted in 1936): Extremely reduced on the nose. Then concentrated, sappy and sweet on the palate, with its impression of solidity leavened by surprising acidity. As large-scaled as the Dent de Chien but showing less personality in the early going in spite of its energy. Finishes with strong salinity, serious structure and outstanding grip. This wine will require extended aging before it approaches its peak.

90pts Allen Meadows
A very pungent nose is composed by notes of petrol, smoke and sulfur that are enough to bury the fruit at present so I would suggest decanting this first if you're tempted to try a bottle young. Otherwise there is good punch if only average density to the delicious and appealingly stony medium weight flavors that terminate in a dry, clean and citrusy finish.
