There are a few brilliant domaines to chase after in Chambolle-Musigny and Jacques-Frederic Mugnier is one of the top choices. Born in 1955, Frédéric Mugnier was originally an engineer based in Saudi Arabia but went back to help with the domaine whenever he could. He eventually got tired of being expatriated and decided to stay in Chambolle since 1985 which he proceed to study oenology. Since then, the domaine has gone from strength to strength.
The latest release 2017 seems very promising. Frédéric Mugnier mentioned that the 2017s are "elegant and classically styled wines that should drink well young but because they're so well-balanced.” For the Chambolle-Musigny village, it comes from “two different parcels of vines, one located in the premier cru Les Plantes, which was planted in 1968 and the second from the villages-level portion of La Combe d'Orveau, 60% of which is young vines and the remainder is 40+ year old vines" (from Allen Meadow’s Burghound), which is a high-quality wine that lets drinkers explore the domaine’s style without breaking the bank. A cool, pretty and airy red berry fruit-suffused nose displays additional background nuances of violet and lavender. There is good vibrancy to the detailed and attractively textured lighter weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the saline, clean and focused finale.
