While Chablis, Cote de Nuits and Cote de Beaune are the regions offering the finest examples of Chardonnay, Domaine de la Bongran from Macon is one of the hidden gems of Chardonnay in Burgundy. Macon lies furthest south of the five sub-regions and therefore, has a slightly warmer climate. The wines produced are therefore simpler, with a focus on fruit, but much less minerality and depth; however, wines from Domaine de la Bongran is not the case - they are richer, fuller and more complex.
Jean Thevenet is the current owner and winemaker of Domaine de la Bongran. His father noticed the great potential in the Viré Clessé appellation so he bought more surrounding parcels and sold off other flatland property. Jean was one of the handful of people who were first credited for implementing organic, minimal and natural practices in their productions back in the 1980s. In creation of Vire-Clesse 'Cuvee Tradition E.J. Thevenet', Jean Thevenet decided to include small portions of botrytis grapes to complete its structure to be a memorable wine.
After sampling a couple of vintages of Vire-Clesse 'Cuvee Tradition E.J. Thevenet', we are confident that this is a compelling buy, and will be a truly entertaining mix to taste four different vintages that we have on offer here today –
