After sampling more than a hundred Chardonnays from our trip in Burgundy, there was a candidate that clearly stood out but you may have neither heard of this producer nor the climat of the bottle however this was such an incredible wine that we decided to buy a few bottles to drink during the rest of our journey! Capitain Gagnerot has a long history in Burgundy and it was established in 1802 by Simon Gagnerot. They were one of the pioneers who did bottling in the estate. When Simon's son became in-charge, he decided to setup a joint-partnership with Francois Capitain who was his son-in-law and changed the name to Capitain-Gagnerot. In the next century up til now, the estate remains its classic style of wines by retaining old clone varieties, which are able to force the root to go deeper enabling the vines to receive nutrients from the subsoil and hence producing very terroir-driven wines. Winemaking remains very traditional and with intensive work in grape selection. The wines are always clean and mineral-driven, and the white wine receives 9 months oak aging with only 10% new oak for all of the wines including Grand Cru.
Among all of the wines tasted from Capitain Gagnerot, there is a white from Ladoix ‘Hautes Mourottes’ 1er Cru that made a deep impression. Ladoix ‘Hautes Mourottes’ 1er Cru is sits comfortably alongside the famous Corton-Charlemagne (see map above), a highly-regarded Grand Cru site of producing buttery and big-bodied Chardonnay which easily costs over a thousand dollars a bottle. The Capitain Gagnerot Ladoix ‘Hautes Mourottes’ 1er Cru shows clear potential to compete with his Grand Cru neighbors and at a fraction of their price. This is a complete Chardonnay for any occasion. A baby Corton-Charlemagne which we highly recommend, we tend to believe this is a Grand Cru White Burgundy that combines finesse, elegance and have complete enjoyment -
