Domaine Michel Gaunoux is one of the most low-profile Burgundy domaines which was founded over a century ago in 1885 in Cote de Beaune. They produce in minuscule quantities, making their wines difficult to find and secure, let alone high-scoring back-vintages. Their wines are very classic in style with complex structure - quality comparable to some of the best Grand Cru producers in the same region but which are much more expensive than Gaunoux; and sometimes Gaunoux would hold back some vintages for a couple of years before they release them into the market so that the wines would be more approachable. Allen Meadows puts Domaine Jean-Michel Gaunoux at high profile exclaiming it is “one of the finest domaines in all of Burgundy".
Last week while in Burgundy, we tasted and were impressed by their Meursault Les Perrieres 1er Cru 2010 which has aged beautifully and developed it’s complexity with nearly 8 years aging in the cellar. The Meursault is very intense, deep with impeccable finishes which made us stop to enjoy the moment with every sip of the wine. Stephen Tanzer is also a fan of this wine, giving this comparatively “cheap” wine a massive 94pts and commented that it is “a very clear expression of Perrieres terroir”.
We were fortunate to be able to secure some of this Perrieres 2010, direct from the Domaine, to offer you today -

With its aromas of pineapple, powdered stone and tea leaf, this smells a bit sweeter than the Genevrieres. Dense but light on its feet, with terrific inner-mouth perfume to the flavors of lavender, powdered stone and minerals. Taut, elegant, very dry wine with superb cut and rising length. A very clear expression of Perrieres terroir.
