Corton-Charlemagne is a large Grand Cru appellation that lies on the hill of Montagne de Corton in Cote de Beaune. Both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are planted in Corton, however only wines made with Chardonnay are labelled “Corton-Charlemagne” while those made with Pinot Noir are just labelled “Corton”. It is also the “only vineyard in Burgundy bearing the name of two emperors: "Corton" comes from the Gallo-Roman Curtis d'Othon, meaning the Domaine of Othon, a German emperor. It gave the word Courthon, which became Corton. Famous emperor Charlemagne (Carolus Magnus) was, according to legend, the owner of the vineyard. “ (Reference from Joseph Drouhin, https://m.drouhin.com/en/wine/169/corton-charlemagne-grand-cru).
The styles of Corton-Charlemagne vary between winemakers and domaines. In general, Corton-Charlemagne remains high quality with expressive yellow, tropical fruits flavours with good touches of buttery notes and minerals. Many of them are powerful and expansive with solid oak influence. They are usually built to age and go well in around 5-10 years.

Some of the very top ones, such as Coche Dury Corton Charlamagne costs above Hk$30,000 per bottle nowadays.
