Pommard is one of the Burgundy appellations that is given little attention to, but there's one wine from Pommard that we would really recommend you to check out - Domaine du Comte Armand's Clos des Epeneaux Monopole.
Benjamin Leroux was the winemaker for Comte Armand for 8 years until 2007 when he opened up his own negociant business. During his tenure at Comte Armand, Allen Meadows once said that Benjamin "might be a natural heir of Henri Jayer” which is a huge compliment and proof of the amazing quality of his productions. On the Clos des Epeneaux monopole, Burgundy writer Jasper Morris wrote that “If Pommard can be an elegant wine, then the Clos des Epeneaux is the vineyard to demonstrate it”.
Having lots of great experiences with this monopole from Comte Armand, Comte Armand Pommard Clos de Epeneaux has been consistently brilliant in various vintages, we think they are a serious counterpart with many Grand Crus and nowadays retain very friendly price tags to buy -
Comte Armand Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru Monopole 2004 HK$660 per bottle, 2 bts available 91 pts Allen Meadows “Outstanding” A touch of reduction detracts only mildly from the ripe and expressive nose of earth and game followed by delicious, deep and moderately structured medium full flavors that coat the mouth with sap and the texture is pure velvet. There is a firm tannic backbone yet the tannins are fine and this should age well.
Comte Armand Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru Monopole 2008 HK$900 per bottle, 5 bts available 90-93 pts Allen Meadows “Sweet Spot Outstanding” Extremely subtle wood frames more complex and more densely fruited earthy and fresh red pinot, plum and currant aromas that slide gracefully into detailed, intense and big-bodied flavors that possess plenty of dry extract which does its job of buffering the firm tannic spine on the detailed, balanced and strikingly long finish. This appears to have excellent aging potential.
Comte Armand Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru Monopole 2011 HK$690 per bottle, 6 bts available 92 pts Allen Meadows “Outstanding” This is really quite expressive for a young Clos des Epeneaux with its relatively refined and pure nose of red currant, dried flowers, iron-inflected earth and soft spice scents. There is good power and plenty of punch to the broad-shouldered and muscular medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the perfectly balanced and highly persistent finish that displays moderate austerity. This is really very impressive and will need at least 10 to 12 years to be at its best.
