“...one of the leading lights of Vosne-Romanée until the tragic death of Philippe Engel” – Jasper Morris
“As I wrote in 2000, this is "textbook Grands-Echézeaux" and there is nothing in here that would suggest otherwise” – Allen Meadows wrote on Rene Engel 1999 Grands Echezeaux
A 7ha domaine which held some of the best Grand Cru vineyards in Clos Vougeot, Grands Echezeaux and Echezeaux as well as excellent 1er Cru in Vosne Romanee les Brulees, Domaine Rene Engel came to an end after Rene Engel’s grandson Philippe sadly died from a heart attack in 2005. The domaine was then sold to Francois Pinault and the property was renamed Domaine d’Eugenie. 2004 was the last vintage from Domaine Rene Engel.
The talented Philippe Engel had a remarkable strong and unique style. Wine Advocate’s William Kelley had once commented that “I’d speculate that it’s this characteristic—their unpretentious authenticity—that makes them so sought-after today”. Among their productions, Domaine Rene Engel’s Clos Vougeot is arguably the finest wine among three Grand Crus that the domaine owned before 2004. They owned 1.37 hectares in Clos Vougeot which lies at the top slope of the terroir. It is an intriguing experience for every Burgundy aficionados to try the stunning work of Philippe Engel.

Rene Engel Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2000 HK$5,500 per bottle, 6 bottles available 17.5 out of 20 pts Jancis Robinson Very intriguing and concentrated with mealy notes and some hints of cabbage leaves (more delicious than this sounds). Real excitement. Long, with layers.
[SOLD OUT] Rene Engel Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2002 HK$6,600 per bottle, 2 bottles available 19 out of 20 pts Jancis Robinson Absolutely gorgeous, deep, subtle, layered nose already. Undergrowth and liquid sparkling rubies. Bravo! Iron fist almost hidden.
Rene Engel Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2003 HK$4,900 per bottle, 6 bottles available 18 out of 20 pts Jancis Robinson Only mid crimson. Fully exotic, round and charming. Not a great core of fruit in the middle. Slightly more vegetal than usual. A bit more restrained than Les Brulees on the nose, then a great whack of ripe fruit on the palate. Very impressive. Pretty fierce tannins, but the fruit is good.
