Pommard is one of the Burgundy appellations that is given little attention to, but there's one wine from Pommard that we would really recommend you to check out - Domaine du Comte Armand's Clos des Epeneaux Monopole.
Benjamin Leroux was the winemaker for Comte Armand for 8 years until 2007 when he opened up his own negociant business. During his tenure at Comte Armand, Allen Meadows once said that Benjamin "might be a natural heir of Henri Jayer” which is a huge compliment and proof of the amazing quality of his productions. On the Clos des Epeneaux monopole, Burgundy writer Jasper Morris wrote that “If Pommard can be an elegant wine, then the Clos des Epeneaux is the vineyard to demonstrate it”.
Having lots of great experiences with this monopole from Comte Armand, we like to pay more attention to some generally "weaker" vintages because we believe that gives Comte Armand Pommard Clos de Epeneaux a more approachable angle to enjoy when young! Here we have selected two vintages from the hands of Benjamin Leroux which will be open and able to offer to show their charm now -
Comte Armand Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru Monopole 2004 HK$660 per bottle 91 pts Allen Meadows “Outstanding” A touch of reduction detracts only mildly from the ripe and expressive nose of earth and game followed by delicious, deep and moderately structured medium full flavors that coat the mouth with sap and the texture is pure velvet. There is a firm tannic backbone yet the tannins are fine and this should age well.
Comte Armand Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru Monopole 2007
HK$730 per bottle
92 pts Allen Meadows This took a long time to get going and in fact was actually a bit green on the nose initially yet with several hours of air eventually blossomed to reveal a relatively ripe and solidly complex nose of dark berry fruit aromas and earth nuances. There is good energy and punch to the medium-bodied flavors that possess fine depth and even better length. The 2007 Clos des Epeneaux is what I would describe as a refined vintage for what can be a robust wine yet one that is still on the way up so I would advise a few more years of cellar time first.
