We had great enjoyment with a bottle of Paul Bara Special Club 2008 yesterday and if you haven’t heard of “Special Club” from Champagne before, we strongly recommend you to try this!
Special Club is formed by a group of grower-producers and they united together to establish Club de Viticulteurs Champenois back in 1971. Back in those days, the Champagne market was dominated by large Champagne houses and so this Club wanted to promote estate-grown grapes which offers drinkers different perspectives into the different terroirs in Champagne. As part of the club membership, each grower makes a Special Club cuvee which represents the best production of the house, made only from the best years. The wines have to be approved from two blind tastings and are only allowed to be released into the market after they get approved with a very unique Special Club Champagne bottle that is based on an 18th century design which stands out from the modern standard design of Champagne bottles.
The union changed its name to Club Tresors de Champagne in 1999 and nowadays there are only 28 members remaining. Among them, Paul Bara is one of the highly-acclaimed producers who joined Club de Viticulteurs Champenois since the start. Paul Bara started growing vines since 1833 and Paul Bara’s daughter Chantale currently manages the estate with 11 hectare of vineyards in the Montagne de Reims. They are one of the hidden names that is unfamiliar among wine connoisseurs however the qualities are excellent - a Pinot Noir-based estate producing elegant, refined Champagne with multiple layers. They should not be overlooked.
