A chateau with a long and influential history, the 2nd Growth Pauillac of Chateau Baron is one of the greatest names in Bordeaux. They made one of their finest wines from the 1990 vintage, a wine that goes head-to-head for quality versus some of the biggest names in the region. Neal Martin gave it a massive 98 pts and commented that this is "better than many 1990 First Growth" and is "one of my benchmark wines". We believe these bottles are at their peak and able to create a unique moment once the cork is pulled out.
We have purchased a parcel from France last week with only 7 bottles available which we strongly recommend you to consider before it is sold out. Having stayed in an old cellar being unmoved since release, these bottles enjoyed ideal condition to mature. Putting it head to head with the two First Growths from Pauillac, Chateau Pichon Baron surprisingly has a higher score from critics and the table clearly shows its value -
Chateau Pichon Baron 1990 HK$2,290 per bottle (Best Price in Hong Kong#, 7 bottles available) 98 pts Neal Martin The 1990 Pichon-Longueville Baron has always been one of my benchmark wines, one that never ceases to perform. Now at 27 years of age, it is clearly at its peak, and what a wondrous thing it is. Now showing some bricking on the rim, the bouquet is utterly sublime, with red berries, cedar, touches of graphite, crushed rose petals and incense. You just want to become enveloped by these aromas. The palate is perfectly balanced, perhaps not as structured as it once showed since the tannins have mellowed, but what you get is a Pauillac relishing its secondary phase, which is almost Burgundy-like in terms of mouthfeel. Suffused with tension, it gains weight in the mouth toward the slightly tart finish. It is a Pichon Baron that only knows how to give sophisticated drinking pleasure. I once wrote that Pichon Baron is better than many 1990 First Growth, and that is a statement I have no reason to change. Tasted April 2017.
97 pts Robert Parker A remarkable vintage for Pichon Longueville Baron, 1990 is one of this estate’s two or three finest wines made in the last 40 years. Still inky/blue/purple-tinged to the rim, it reveals an extraordinary bouquet of charcoal, incense, creme de cassis, blue and black fruits, and a hint of licorice as well as an impressively long finish. While drinkable, its evolution is extremely slow, and I would not be surprised to see it last another two decades or more.
Subject to final confirmation. Wines will be shipped from France in Sep 2018 and arrive in Oct 2018. Photo available on request.
