Nicolas Potel started his negotiant business in 1996 under his name and since then he has created a name for himself among drinkers who look for great value Burgundies. He has an extensive sourcing network of high quality grapes and has the skills to produce fantastic Burgundies at excellent price tags. Sadly, he suffered financial hardship and decided to sell his business in 2004; however, in 2009 he created a new name under Roche de Bellene to continue his negotiant business in Beaune. With the new label, great qualities are retained and Nicolas Potel has been aggressively working on biodynamic methods in which most of the growers he works with are operating either organically or biodynamically.
Today we have access to 2 top Grand Crus - Richebourg and Montrachet - from Roche de Bellene and both are positioned well considering their price tags, even compared against the legendary DRC. Vinous’s Stephen Tanzer is never a critic that is easy to please and he has given a massive score for Roche de Bellene Richebourg at 93-96 pts. A real counterpart of Domaine de la Romanee Conti but at only 20% of its price, this is a good opportunity to buy before it disappears from the market -
Roche de Bellene Richebourg Grand Cru 2011
HK$3,790 per bottle (Minimum purchase 3 bottles or above)
93-96 pts Stephen Tanzer
Deep aromas of red raspberry liqueur and chocolate. High-toned but quite youthfully unevolved, with a distinct smashed-fruit character. Combines outstanding mid-palate volume for the year with superb precision. Wonderfully layered grand cru with a very long finish featuring terrific grip and framing acidity. In its texture, this really transcends the vintage.
As for Montrachet, not much need said - it is widely considered to be the terroir that produces the best white wine in the world. Roche de Bellene has made a precious product from this and not to be missed. Putting it side by side with one of the top Montrachet producers, again DRC, the table below speaks for itself! -

17.5 out of 20 pts Jancis Robinson
Big and full bodied and a pretty good, smoky interpretation. Tense, nervy. Not a top scorer but recognizably grand cru.
