La Rioja Alta is located at the heart of the Haro's historic "Barrio de la Estación" at Rioja Alta, where López de Heredia and Muga can be found. Despite having grown from a small vineyard to a significant 400-hectare estate, the descendants of the founders are still shareholders today and its current chairman is the fifth generation of his family. The winery is famous for its Reservas - Alberdi, Arana and Ardanza - and particularly for its Gran Reservas, the 904 and 890, both of which are only produced in exceptional years.
The wines of La Rioja Alta exceptionally well-made and only released after the wines have matured peacefully for about 5-9 years in the cellar. Their La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 continues to represent some of the very best value on the fine wine market. We have bought a couple of La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 2007 last week and after 10 years of aging, they are real testament to the value and quality.
According to La Rioja Alta, the Gran Reserva 904 2007 is "cherry-red with a ruby rim; clean, bright and lively. Highly complex nose with a creamy bouquet and spicy notes of cinnamon, vanilla, powder chocolate, snuff box and a background of undergrowth that lead to stewed red fruit and cherry liqueur. Tasty in the mouth, with good texture, balanced and fresh on the palate with elegant, tamed tannins. Outstandingly long, persistent and refined finish with notes of sweet tobacco, cedar and spice, cherry liqueur and coffee caramel aftertaste. A classic Rioja which stands out for its freshness and great bottle ageing potential."
This is a wine that will continue to age gracefully for a decade and more, and has become the standard bearer for outstanding, traditionally styled Gran Reserva Rioja. We are very pleased to offer -

If Viña Ardanza seems to be going fast, the Gran Reserva 904 is even faster and we're now on the 2007 Gran Reserva 904. This wants to be the classic Gran Reserva--polished, silky and elegant, with aging potential. It is a blend of Tempranillo with 10% Mazuelo aged for four years in well-seasoned American oak barrels, with eight manual rackings. I found that the freshness of the vintage and its relatively young age gave the wine a youngish character that I loved, combining developed notes of meat, spices, leather and balsam with almost cherry-like aromas. The palate feels balanced and elegant, with fine-grained and fully resolved tannins and great acidity. This vintage of 904 surprised me!
