Philipponnat Clos des Goisses is the best kept secret in Champagne – a single vineyard plot which spreads over 5.5 hectares, with around 70% growing Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay. The plot of vineyard has been separated into 16 individual plots with different ages of vines. It is unique compared to any other single vineyards in Champagne as it is situated on an extremely steep slope, and is south-facing making the fruits hence the wines produced extra fruity and rich in flavour. Dosage is kept low around 4-5g/l to reflect this terroir-driven Champagne. With the unique qualities of this Champagne, it has a serious position among Champagne connoisseurs and sommeliers. We are happy to offer two excellent-priced Clos des Goisses from 2003 and 2007. Vinous’s Antonio Galloni awarded both vintages with 95 points, describing the 2003 vintage as “vinous in style” and “drop-dead gorgeous”, while 2007 is “gorgeous”and “a wine of superb elegance”. Both priced at only HK$980 per bottle, these would be excellent additions to your Champagne collection.
Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 2003
HK$980 per bottle (5 bottles in stock) 95 pts Antonio Galloni The 2003 Clos de Goisses is hands down one of the most pleasant surprises of this very challenging harvest. An open, floral bouquet leads to voluptuous, expressive fruit in a Champagne that stands out for its exceptional balance. Clos ds Goisses is always quite vinous in style, and that is very much the case in 2003 as well. A creamy, intense wine, the 2003 Goisses is drop-dead gorgeous. Licorice, smoke, honey, chamomile, and graphite are some of many notes that open up over time, lending an air of exoticism that is irresistible. Clos des Goisses has a stellar track record of aging. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see what time brings to the 2003. Production was just 6,000 bottles as opposed to the more typical 22,000-25,000. For that sacrifice, Charles Philipponnat was rewarded with an exceptional Clos des Goisses. This bottle was disgorged in August 2012. Tom Stevenson Like a Montrachet with bubbles! The softest of mousses. A unique Clos des Goisses, but not as rich and heavy as could have been feared from such a hot year.
Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 2007 HK$980 per bottle (12 bottles available in 2 weeks) 95 pts Antonio Galloni The 2007 Clos des Goisses is gorgeous. Almost shockingly finessed and light on its feet for Goisses, the 2007 is a wine of superb elegance. The power and richness of Goisses is there, but in the background. It will be many years before the 2007 blossoms into a complete, fully expressive Champagne. Even so, it is striking today. With time, hints of lemon confit, chamomile and marzipan develop in the glass, but readers will have to cellar the 2007 for at least five years, maybe more, to get the full Goisses experience. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged June, 2016.
