We were lucky to meet Joseph Colin in person during our trip to Burgundy a few weeks ago and sampled three wines that he started to make under his own name from Saint-Aubin in 2016 and they are absolutely gorgeous. Our tasting notes are shared down below. As it was only his first vintage using his own label, there were only about 6 barrels produced so it is extremely limited in quantity.
A bit of history and background for how Joseph Colin came about to producing his own label wines, his father Marc Colin was one of the honored white winemakers in St Aubin. Marc started his estate in 1970 and his productions spread across St-Aubin, Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny Montrachet. He also had a solid holding in Le Montrachet. Marc has four children – Pierre-Yves, Joseph, Damien and Caroline. The eldest son Pierre-Yves decided to work alone with his wife Carolin Morey and nowadays has become one of the most highly sought-after rising stars – Pierre Yves-Colin Morey, making excellent qualities St Aubin and Chassagne-Montrachet year after year. While in 2005, Marc Colin's domaine was handed over to Joseph, Damien and Caroline in which Joseph has been taking a crucial role in the domaine in the past 13 years. Just a few years ago, Joseph planned to start his own domaine and he made that happen in 2016 – a tiny “domaine” testimonial from St Aubin in which only three wines are made and two of them only have a limited production of 300 bottles in the 2016 vintage.
From 2017, Joseph Colin will have a total of 7 hectares spreading across Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and St Aubin. We are optimistic that they will be one of the highlights for people who hunger for great value whites in Burgundy.
