Perhaps there's not as many great examples from Pommard as there are from Gevrey-Chambertin or Vosne-Romanee, but there's one in particular that we want to introduce to you if you don't already know – Domaine du Comte Armand's Clos des Epeneaux - probably the best kept secret among all Burgundy connoisseurs around the world. It is the best Pommard domaine and monopole dating back to 1826; and Comte Armand is a name to remember among the top list of Burgundy domaines.
Interestingly, Domaine du Comte Armand recruited two top rising stars in Burgundy between 1985 and 2007. One of them was Pascal Marchard who managed the domaine between 1985 and 1998, and then proceeded to set up his own domaine Marchand-Tawse which makes the mouth-watering Musigny and other wines you must have heard of in recent years. After 1998, Benjamin Leroux took over the domaine and was praised by Allen Meadows that he “might be a natural heir of Henri Jayer”. Specifically on their Clos des Epeneaux monopole, Burgundy writer Jasper Morris wrote that “If Pommard can be an elegant wine, then the Clos des Epeneaux is the vineyard to demonstrate it”. We are glad to be able to offer three vintages that would well present how they can evolve in the bottle. They are great options for people looking for reliable blockbuster from Burgundy, at excellent positions and reasonable price in market -
