We opened a bottle of Roty Gevrey Chambertin 2009 yesterday and would really recommend you try this too - though only a village, it has focused blackcurrant, forest and raspberry aroma, medium-bodied, dense and structured with broad range of tastes - it impressed us all. This is a perfect vintage in Burgundy and is absolutely gorgeous. The critics agree too -
“The village wines, including those from Marsannay, routinely outperform most premier crus from the northern Cote de Nuits. And they are reasonably priced” – Stephen Tanzer
“Roty wines are very distinctive. They are full, very intense, very perfumed and very harmonious. They are certainly immensely seductive.” – Clive Coates MW
Joseph Roty and his family are one of the cult wine producers in Gevrey Chambertin. They have been making wines since 1710 and for over 300 years the production has been minuscule; there is also not much availability in the secondary market as most of the wines are kept in cellars of large Burgundy collectors. They keep a very low profile in which they turn the press away and are never eager to participate in tasting events. They may seem very unwelcoming but as we've said before, that doesn't mean their wines aren't awesome - which they are. Retaining very low yield, they maintain their very old vines in which some were planted in the 1880s and use very traditional ways of winemaking, their wines usually have high concentration and full of dark fruits' purity, seamlessly integrated with their usually high usage of barrels.
We have a case of Roty’s Gevrey Chambertin village 2009 in stock and this is definitely the perfect start to experience the domaine’s style with a more modest price tag (their iconic Charmes Chambertin 2009 would easily ask for HK$2,800 per bottle!). According to Allen Meadows’ note, they are“very Gevrey in basic character” and possess “moderately firm tannins on the persistent and toasty finish”. We are so far the only listing in the world*, and we are happy these at HK$530 per bottle only, 12 bottles available -

Mild wood influence frames very fresh red and blue pinot fruit, earth and mineral-infused aromas that are very Gevrey in basic character that give way to voluminous and cool middle weight flavors that possess fine dry extract that imparts a lovely sense of volume as well as buffers the moderately firm tannins on the persistent and toasty finish. This should reward 5 to 7 years of bottle age. Drink: 2015+
The Roty Gevrey Chambertin 2009 opens up after an hour with focused blackcurrant, forest and raspberry aroma, medium bodied, it’s dense and structured with a very broad range of taste such as blackcurrant, licorice and woody palate. It’s a charmingly smooth village that would keep improving from time to time. No hesitation to drink now but will definite well worth keeping some for the next 5 years.
