A Burgundy Grand Cru could be very expensive as it only represents less than 5% of total production in the region. We are all familiar with the names – Chambertin, Musigny and Montrachet. The largest Grand Cru appellation is Clos de Vougeot, covering 50 hectares but divided by more than 80 owners and the terroir is uneven and segmented into many parcels. Because of this reason, their quality and styles are highly varied and some may not be very worthy of the status as a "Grand Cru", more often than not, leaving customers confused and disappointed with their purchase. However, when it comes to reliable winemakers who carefully manage from grapes to wines, such as Leroy, Meo Camuzet, Rene Engel, Hudelot Noellat and last but not least Vougeraie, their Clos de Vougeot usually meets people's expectations of a Grand Cru and offers much better prices than Richebourg and Musigny.
If you are looking for a Grand Cru with a good bargain, Domaine de la Vougeraie is the first that comes to our mind. We tried the bottle of Domaine de la Vougeraie Clos Vougeot 2004 earlier this year and we believe this qualifies as a Grand Cru and offers great value – silky texture, solid structure and retains very pure red fruits and exotic spices at only HK$650 per bottle. Hand on heart - it is not be likely to find any better choice than this -
Domaine de la Vougeraie Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2004

"Instead of the usual reserved and brooding nose of earth and herbs, this is high-toned spicy and somewhat vegetal with supple, textured and forward flavors that are on the somber side but focused, intense and persistent yet there is an elegance here, even a lacy quality that is interesting. I would even go so far as to call this delicate, which is highly unusual for what this is yet it does not detract from the overall impression of superb length."
