There are a few brilliant wines to chase after in Nuit-St-Georges and Jacques-Frederic Mugnier’s Clos de la Marchale 1er Cru is one of the top choices. A monopole has been owned by the Mugnier family since 1902, and rented out temporarily to Joseph Faiveley from the 1950s til 2003. Turning from an engineer to a winemaker, the current owner Jacques-Frederic Mugnier decided to take back the vineyard from 2004 harvest. The site produces both red and white, and quality has been improved under Jacques-Frederic Mugnier management over the years. Interestingly, he separates his red into Clos de la Maréchale and Clos des Fourches because he sees a remarkable difference between the two wines. Clos des Fourches is usually sourced from younger vines and provide an earlier drinking opportunity to taste this great value Nuits-St-Georges which often express an abundance of dark fruits, violet and earthiness when it matures.
Today we are happy to offer Clos de la Maréchale 2005 and Clos des Fourches 2008, both which have recently stepped into their maturation and therefore very worth your consideration -
JF Mugnier Nuits-St-Georges Clos de la Maréchale Rouge 1er Cru 2005
HK$850 per bottle (Best Price in HK*)
92 pts Allen Meadows
In contrast to the expressiveness of the first two '05s, here there is a completely different aromatic profile and one that is brooding with more deeply pitched and quite ripe blue and violet aromas combining with pungent earth and game hints that continue onto the sweet, rich and sappy flavors wrapped around a firm tannic spine. This is impressive as it is clearly Nuits in character yet with refined and sophisticated structural elements. Also recommended.
JF Mugnier Nuits-St.Georges Clos des Fourches Rouge 2008
HK$460 per bottle (Best Price in the World*)
88 pts Antonio Galloni
The 2008 Nuits St. Georges Clos des Fourches is the second wine made from young vines in Clos de La Marechale. Mugnier bottles the Clos des Fourches when he feels there is a marked difference between the two wines, which is certainly the case in 2008. This is a dense Burgundy with plenty of dark fruit and Nuits character if not quite the finesse of the best wines here. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020.
