Perhaps there's not as many great examples from Pommard as there are from Gevrey Chambertin or Vosne Romanee, but there's one in particular that we want to introduce to you if you don't already know – Domaine du Comte Armand's Clos des Epeneaux, the best Pommard domaine and certainly a monopole dating back to 1826. Domaine du Comte Armand’s Clos des Epeneaux is the best kept secret among Burgundy connoisseurs all over the world.
Interestingly, Domaine du Comte Armand recruited two top rising stars in Burgundy between 1985 and 2007. Pascal Marchard managed the domaine from 1985 to 1998, who then started his own domaine Marchand-Tawse which makes mouth-watering Musigny and other wines. After 1998, Benjamin Leroux took over the domaine and was praised by Allen Meadows that he “might be a natural heir of Henri Jayer”. Even the Burgundy writer Jasper Morris wrote that “If Pommard can be an elegant wine, then the Clos des Epeneaux is the vineyard to demonstrate it”.
Comte Armand is a name to remember among the top list of Burgundy domaines and, in our thoughts, their top wine Clos des Epeneaux is very reasonably priced.
We are glad to offer Comte Armand’s Clos des Epeneaux Monopole 1999 and 2008, perfect provenance from an original case, lying in a professional cellar in UK and able to offer and, again, at best price in the world* -
Comte Armand Pommard Clos des Epeneaux Monopole 1999 HK$1,030 per bottle (World lowest listing at HK$1,230*) 94 pts Allen Meadows A genuinely brilliant nose that is at once extravagant and highly expressive reflects intensely earthy and spicy aromas that remain completely primary before giving way to opulently rich, round and notably sweet medium full-bodied flavors that deliver flat out incredible length on the mocha, velvet and mouth coating finish. Despite the higher than normal yields, this is really quite concentrated, seamless and exquisitely harmonious. In sum, this is a Clos des Epeneaux that should age for years to come, particularly in magnum format. Note that this isn't quite completely ready but it's getting close, especially if given 30 to 60 minutes of aeration first. Tasted twice in this format with consistent notes.
Comte Armand Pommard Clos des Epeneaux Monopole 2008 HK$630 per bottle 90-93 pts Allen Meadows “Sweet spot Outstanding” Extremely subtle wood frames more complex and more densely fruited earthy and fresh red pinot, plum and currant aromas that slide gracefully into detailed, intense and big-bodied flavors that possess plenty of dry extract which does its job of buffering the firm tannic spine on the detailed, balanced and strikingly long finish. This appears to have excellent aging potential.
