With history stretching back over 800 years, the chateau and winery of Château Smith Haut Lafitte in Pessac-Leognan had not been well cared for and created less than impressive wines. It wasn't until 1990 that the run-down and neglected estate was purchased by its current owners Daniel and Florence Cathiard that it began to gain more attention for its wines. The Cathiards made a complete overhaul - restoring the 16th century chateau tower, renovating the cellars, taking on a organic approach in winemaking and threw out all the mechanical harvesting methods - and created wines that surpassed many of its rivals and gained a reputation as "the quintessential Graves" in just a little over twenty years.
They produce six different wines from their single block on a Gunz gravel plateau in Pessac-Leognan, which are "Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte" - a Graves Great Growth in both red and white, and two second wines "Les Hauts de Smith" and "Le Petit Haut Lafitte", also in red and white, in which each has its own unique blend and distinctive aromatic profile.
Today we are pleased to offer you a small parcel of their Le Petit Haut Lafitte 2009 - a second wine which is made from fruits from younger vines or declassified grapes of the Château Smith Haut Lafitte, making it more approachable when young and already ready to drink nowadays while you might need to wait longer for the Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2009. The Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2009 was awarded with 100 points from Robert Parker but currently demands a price of HK$2,246 a bottle^, so with the Le Petit Haut Lafitte 2009 being only 20% of that price (HK$485 per bottle+), this is a steal! -
