Founded in 1920, Domaine Coche-Dury has a profound status in Meursault, probably equivalent to that of Henri Jayer's in Vosne-Romanee, and was even said to be "one of the greatest winemakers on planet earth" by wine critic Robert Parker, and called "King of Meursault" by Winehog's Steen Öhman. The domaine was passed down to the family's third generation, Jean-Francois Coche, in the mid-1970s and after marrying Odile Dury that the domaine was renamed to "Coche-Dury"; and has been managed by Jean-Francois' son Raphael since 2010 who maintains the same quality and style and equally stunning wines as his father.
Over the decades, the domaine has been producing top-quality wines across the board, from village to their Grand Crus. While they are best known for their Chardonnay, they also produce 6 exquisite Pinot Noirs. They own a total of approximately 9 hectares of vineyards across Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Auxey-Duresses, Monthelie and Volnay, in which about 50% is situated in their hometown Meursault.
Throughout the generations, Domaine Coche-Dury puts a lot of emphasis in the vineyard, with a strong belief that the success of their wines comes from hard work in the vineyards. They prune their vines extensively and do not use any pesticides and work hard to maintain the ecological balance, and then applies fairly traditional vinification approaches with the proportion of new oak varying from year to year, but in general, the domaine is accustomed to using quite a lot of new oak, using up to 50% new oak for their top wines. The wines are kept in their barrels to age for around 15-22 months and then bottled without any filtration. The resulting wines are sublime, pure, and elegant with solid intensity to evolve exceptionally well with aging.
