Established in 1859 by the cooper-craftsman Jean-Edouard Dupard, Domaine Jean Chartron is now managed by the 5th generation of the family, Jean-Michel Chartron. Domaine Jean Chartron owns 14 hectares of vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet and the neighbour villages, the major part of which being Premiers and Grands Crus. Amongst the Grand Crus, they manage some excellent parcels of Chevalier-Montrachet and Batard-Montrachet. All the fruits are handpicked on a good mix of different ripeness levels and with good acidities. The wines are kept in 100% wood in which only 5-35% are new wood, then fined and lightly filtered and bottled after an elevage of 12-18 months. Neal Martin well-summarizes the quality and style of Chartron's work, saying, “I’m a big fan of the work that Jean-Michel Chartron is doing …I find his wines to be complex, terroir/vintage expressive… riveting white Burgundy…good as you will find anywhere… up there with the greats like Comtes-Lafon, Leflaive and so on”; and Winehog's Steen Ohman confirmed their status stating that they are "one of the new top contenders".

The 2017 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru exhibits aromas of fresh peach, ripe citrus fruit, beeswax and nutty new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad shouldered and muscular, with excellent depth and dimension at the core, ripe acids and a long, vibrant finish. Despite its unmistakable power, this is an elegantly rendered Bâtard that should offer a broad drinking window.
