The most famous name in Côtes du Rhône, Guigal is also one of the largest and finest wineries in the region. They produce great wines from a myriad of appellations all over the Rhone valley. They exert the utmost care on their vines, the ecosystem of their soil, wine ageing/blending, and even barrel making - truly living their motto "Nul Bien Sans Peine" which means "no good without pain", a saying that is carved on their headquarter's Chateau d'Ampuis. Aside from Hermitage, they are well known for making great wine in Cote Rotie, Condrieu. St. Joseph, Crozes Hermitage, Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Tavel and Cotes du Rhone. Their top Cote Rotie wines are the quality benchmark for the appellation, and they produce an astonishing 40% of all wines produced in the appellation of Hermitage which is an unbelievable achievement in less than 60 years.Hermitage is one of the most famous appellations in the Northern Rhone or in France, and their single-vineyard wines are some of the most sought-after bottles which include Condrieu La Doriane. Starting with 2001, Guigal is striving to lay a claim that their top Hermitage wine, Guigal Ex Voto, is the benchmark wine for the Hermitage appellation as well. Guigal Ex Voto made its first vintage in 2001.

This offers a jaw-dropping display of white peach, creamed Jonagold apple, Cavaillon melon and persimmon fruit flavors intertwined with citronella, chamomile, singed macadamia nut and salted butter notes. Remarkably creamy in feel and seriously long, delivering echoes of citrus oil and smoke. Hard to resist now, but this isn’t going anywhere for a while. Best from 2017 through 2032.

The 2012 Hermitage Ex Voto Blanc is similar to the classic Hermitage Blanc, yet ratchets the intensity up a notch. Acacia flowers, brioche, caramelized peach, quince and even a kiss of mint all emerge from this full-bodied, layered, concentrated white that has fabulous mid-palate depth and a blockbuster finish. Drink it anytime over the coming two decades. One of the highlight tastings during my two weeks spent working in the northern Rhône was with Philippe and Marcel Guigal, who in this critic’s opinion, consistently fashion some of the greatest wines in the world. (2015)
Bright yellow-gold. Ripe citrus and pit fruits and pungent flowers on the powerful, mineral-tinged nose. Sappy, deeply concentrated nectarine, poached pear and honeysuckle flavors show superb clarity and pick up a suggestion of iodine with air. Smoothly melds power and finesse and finishes with outstanding energy and length, leaving behind notes of candied flowers, honey and smoky minerals. (Mar 2016)
