Offered their 2007 vintage earlier this week, we are pleased to follow up with a parcel of the same cuvee Nicolas-Francois from the top Champagne vintage from the decade - 2002.
Founded in 1818, Billecart-Salmon is a medium-size Champagne House in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. The old family-run champagne house was founded by Nicolas-François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon and remains family-owned until this day for over 200 years. The house owns 30 hectares of vineyards, including the amazing Le Clos Saint Hilaire, and it also sources a further 140 hectares of grapes from 35 different sites in which they are all either Grand Cru or Premier Cru quality grapes. Pinot Noir comes from the Montagne de Reims, Chardonnay from the Côtes de Blancs, and the Pinot Meunier from the Marne Valley. One of its top cuvees is Cuvée Nicolas-François Billecart which was created in 1964 as a tribute to the house’s founder. Only the best Grand Cru grapes are used in this prestige cuvee which presents exceptional finesse and harmonious quality which also comes with long cellaring potential. The 2002 Cuvee Nicolas-François Billecart was awarded with high scores and amazing critique from wine critics with 98pts from James Suckling, 96pts Vinous, 95pts Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator, and 18 out of 20pts by Jancis Robinson! At just HK$1,250 per bottle, this is a fantastic bottle offering exceptional value-for-money! -
Billecart-Salmon Cuvee Nicolas-François Billecart Millésime 2002
HK$1,250 per bottle

98pts James Suckling Very impressive depth and detail here. The freshness is staggering. Citrus and grilled-hazelnut aromas lead to a palate that has a very concentrated, slightly creamy and taut feel. Super long and dense with lemon curd, white peaches and a toasty build to the finish. Superb! 96pts Vinous The 2002 Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart is outrageously beautiful. The ripeness of the Chardonnay is front and center in a Champagne that delivers the goods, big-time. An infusion of apricot, orange peel, crème brûlée, chamomile, hazelnut and honey give the 2002 its racy, exotic personality. I enjoy it most with bottle age, but the 2002 is undeniably beautiful right now. The 2002 is a stunning NFB. The blend is 60% Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne and 40% Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, done partially in oak (20%). Dosage is 4 grams per liter. 95pts Wine Advocate Disgorged in April 2016, after 13 years on the lees in bottle, Billecart-Salmon's recent release of the 2002 Millésime Brut Cuvée Nicolas François is an amazing wine for lovers of matured, pure and spicy Champagnes. This is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir (from premier and grand crus of the Montagne de Reims and the Grande Vallée de la Marne) and 40% Chardonnay (from the Côte des Blancs), with 20% vinified in oak barrels. It opens with a deep, rich, intense, pure and chalky bouquet with ripe, yellow-fleshed stone fruits, citrus fruits and beautiful bottle maturity. This is quite mature compared to the 2002 Clos Saint-Hilaire, and this might be due to the cork, which came out of the bottle neck far too easy. This 2002 is rich but more vinous now than the bright and highly delicate 2006. The palate is pretty intense, dense and viscous, while the finish is refined and pure, with vibrant freshness and gastronomic grip. It is slightly drying, though. This is a very complex, round and intense 2002 with very fine bubbles. It should be served with poultry or turbot in a creamy sauce, as recommended by Billecart's chef de cave, Florent Nys. 95pts Wine Spectator There's a buoyant, almost ethereal quality to this elegant Champagne, offering a rich range of blackberry pâte de fruit, crystallized honey, grilled nut and oyster shell flavors, set on a fine, chalky mousse. Long and mouthwatering, with a clean, citrus-infused finish. 18pts out of 20 Jancis Robinson 100% grand and premier cru vineyards. Pinot Noir (60%) from Montagne de Reims and Vallée de la Marne. Chardonnay (40%) from Côte des Blancs. Disgorged spring 2017. Dosage 4 g/l. Tasted blind. The deepest colour of all these wines. Mid straw and persistent bead. Not particularly intense on the nose initially; needed time to open up. Quite noticeable autolysis. Bone dry. Some evidence of oak? Absolutely not a shred of simple fruit here – almost a metallic hint on the end but great, deep undertow. Very complex and uncompromising. Dry and distinctive.
Subject to final confirmation.

[...] In terms of sophistication, elegance and unrivalled precision, this is the wine to buy. I raved about the 2007 Cuvée Louis and this wine is made in a similar vein. This is a sensational vintage for Billecart and NF will outlive Louis given that it has more horsepower under the bonnet. [...] I am in complete awe as to how these wines are so fine and so laser-sighted in their youth. NF is a class apart."
