Located in the northernmost part of the Rully appellation, Domaine de la Folie was established more than two centuries ago and enjoyed its glory up to the 1970s, but went downhill in the 1980s due to the lack of management and investment. Luckily for the domaine, Clemence and husband Baptiste Dubrelle decided to leave their successful careers in public relations and engineering in Paris and moved back to Rully to manage their family domaine, and thus has given it a new lease of life that we now know of today. It was even named as one of the “under the radar” producers of Burgundy by Vinous back in 2018 who urged readers to “keep an eye on Domaine de la Folie”.
All their 13 hectares of vineyards are within the Rully appellation, and within close proximity to the winery which is beneficial for the domaine to manage the whole winemaking process especially during harvest and for their sulphite management. Around two-thirds of vines are planted with Chardonnay, with the rest being Pinot Noir, and a little Aligote. Compared to the main parts of Rully, Domaine de la Folie’s location up north provides them with their distinguishing taste of freshness and being more mineral-driven than the rest of the wines in the area.
With regards to the 2019 vintage for Domaine de la Folie, their location gave them an advantage in this otherwise dry and hot growing season giving them concentration focused on both sugar and acidity thus offering a very nice balance. For Pinot Noir, the grapes were fully ripe while Chardonnay kept its freshness. Vinous had re-visited the domaine in 2020, and commented on their wines saying,
“These are splendid, intermittently brilliant wines that punch well above their weight. Classically styled, their whites seem to emit a bit of sunshine, even on an overcast October afternoon. And that Rully Clos Saint-Jacques is an absolute stunner that begs to be partnered with its Gevrey namesake.”
