Jura is located around 100km from Burgundy and is a famous region for Vin Jaune, a sherry-like wine which is aged in used Burgundian barrels for 6 years or more. The main red grape varieties are Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir, while Chardonnay and Savagnin are the whites that are widely used. It’s a wonderful place which has lots of beautiful steep slopes and is well known for the complex soil and the production of Comté cheese.
Domaine Rolet is one of the most outstanding estates in Jura and extends over 65 hectares in Arbois, Côtes du Jura and l’Etoile. It was established in 1942 by Désiré Rolet. The estate remained family-owned until 2018 when it was acquired by three families: the Devillards, Flamberys and Dupuis'. Organic farming is practiced but it’s very difficult to apply in the steep vineyards. This is an estate that employs some of the most rigorous, complex and costly methods in the region for all of their wines, and Rolet’s wines present mineral-focused and balanced wines with purity and intensity of grapes.
We have been offered a parcel of Jura’s Arbois Pinot Noir (Dry Red) 1988 in 1.5L Magnum format which is just released from Domaine Rolet. With this being stored over 30 years unmoved in the cellar, the provenance is impeccable so we believe this is a compelling buy from a great producer in Jura –
