Thibault Liger-Belair's history in wine dates back to 1720 when his family founded the negociant business. Thibault was the first in the family to aspire to become a vigneron and thus he spent 6 years studying oenology and viticulture, and it was not until 2000 that he had the opportunity to reclaim some of his family's vineyards such as Les St-Georges to set up Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair at the mere age of 26 in 2001. From then on, Thibault has increased its holdings with some of the most esteemed vineyards in Burgundy including Grand Cru plots such as Richebourg and Clos de Vougeot, and also Premier Cru like Les Petits Monts.
Thibault took on an organic approach from the beginning and went fully biodynamic from 2005 onwards, and was one of the first to bring back horses into the vineyards for plowing. He always harvests twice - once to select the best grapes and those to keep as whole clusters, and the second to pick the rest, then rigorously sorted. The winemaking process is always unique to each vintage and parcel with decisions made by Thibault. The oak usage is generally not exceeding 50% new barrels but also not using barrels more than three years old. The natural style of Thibault’s wines is plump and full-bodied, with also some mineral aspects of the fruits.
Today we are pleased to offer Thibault's Nuits-St-Georges "La Charmotte" 2011. This specific plot is just at the bottom of the slope at north of Nuits-St-Georges, right next to the Premier Cru Bousselots. The vines were planted in 1962 and in soil that consists of clay and limestone, creating wines that are generally sweet and elegant, and finishing with a freshness from the limestone.
