Although J.M. Labruyère is a relatively new estate, they have a long history in winemaking in Burgundy since 1850 and Bordeaux since 1992. The family decided to acquire Grand Cru vineyards in Verzenay which are renowned for its Pinot Noir in order to complete their mosaic of terroirs across various wine regions in France. They aimed to make J.M. Labruyère one of the best grower champagnes by combining traditions, sustainable agriculture, haute-couture vinification, Burgundian know-how and vineyard-designated approach and let each terroir show itself.
One of their cuvees is the Labruyère Prologue Grand Cru which is made with a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, all of which is Grand Cru fruit from Verzenay and Verzy. The wine is aged for three years on its lees before disgorgement, which is a period two times superior to appellation requirements. The Champagne offers intriguing complexity, with aromas of dried fruits, enhanced by subtle toastiness and roasted hazelnuts; and on the palate, the wine is rich and harmonious. The beautiful structure of Pinot Noir is exquisitely intertwined with the tension and energy of Chardonnay. The finish is delicate and persistent. This is an excellent example of top quality grower-Champagne from one of the finest terroirs in Montagne de Reims.
