Both situated in Cote de Beaune, Pommard and Volnay are probably the less talked-about appellations among Burgundy wines but they are actually great-value Burgundies that are perfect to pair with hearty meals such as that with beef or lamb steaks and distinctive-flavoured cheeses.
Pommard comprises 28 Premier Crus with Les Rugiens and Les Epenots being the most highly regarded plots. Pommard wine used to be known to be strong and virile, but is now better known as being rich and delicate, and often has the tannin to age well. When young, they usually have aromas of blackberry, bilberry, or gooseberry, cherry pit and ripe plum; and with aging, wild and feline notes develop, and finally notes of leather, chocolate and pepper when they fully mature.
On the other hand, Volnay comprises 29 Premier Crus in which most wines produced are considered some of the most feminine among all Burgundy, though some terroirs do produce slightly more vigorous and masculine Volnays. Their wines are generally velvety, with intensive aromas of violet, gooseberry and cherries, and as it ages, spices, cooked prune and game surface.
