Nicolas Potel grew up shadowing his father in the family-run-and-owned Domaine de la Pousse d’Or and worked for various producers in Burgundy and Australia to prepare himself to take over the family estate. Unfortunately, the estate was sold when his father passed away in 1997 and thus Nicolas decided to establish his own negotiant business in 1996, riding on the extensive connections and experience he had gained over the years. He quickly made a name for himself for creating wines with great quality yet extremely reasonable prices thanks to the amazing sourcing network of high quality grapes and the skills he had learnt from his father and from his apprenticeships over the years. Due to financial hardship in 2004, he sold his business to Cottin Freres (who are also the owners of Laboure-Roi) but remained with the company until 2007 which he then set up a new negotiant business under the name Roche de Bellene in 2009.
Despite the departure of Nicolas Potel from his own label in 2007, the Maison still upholds the winemaking philosophies of Nicolas Potel to this day, which is to create wines that respect both their vineyard provenance and the style of the vintage while remaining attractively priced.
