Though Bernard Moreau only took over the winery in the 1960s, the domaine has roots going back to 1809 when his ancestor Auguste Moreau built a cellar across from the Champs Gain vineyard and farmed his few hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Domaine only got its name, Domaine Bernard Moreau, in 1977 and has been managed by himself and Françoise Moreau, and now joined in by sons Alex and Benoît. As of now, the Domaine has a total of 14 hectares of vineyards.
As with most great Burgundian estates, terroir is of the most importance hence Bernard Moreau has also been taking utmost care for their vineyards in order to produce superior fruit. They use organic fertilizers and no pesticides to maintain healthy balanced soils; and they do pruning, debudding and green harvesting in August to ensure greater flavor intensity but which generate lower yields. They also plant cover crops in certain vineyards to encourage competition between the crops and soak up more moisture. For the winemaking process, Bernard says their spirit of winemaking is "to not touch the wine too often" and their aim is "to produce clean and precise wines which are not too austere". They like the minerality and purity in their chardonnays.
One of their star productions is the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grandes Ruchottes - it's almost impossible not to mention Bernard Moreau when discussing Chassagne-Montrachet as the Domaine makes some of the purest, most thought-provoking wines of the appellation. The Grandes Ruchottes is the oldest vineyard for Bernard Moreau which was planted in 1939 and is considered to be of Grand Cru status. The wine is fermented in only 10-30% new French oak barrels using naturally occurring yeast and aged for 18 months, then bottled without fining and usually without filtration. Wines produced are therefore powerful yet balanced with minerality, and age very well.
