The Noellat family has a very long history in Vosne-Romanee in which the two brothers, Charles and Ernest, were the main players in the family in the early twentieth century. Charles Noellat’s daughter Odile Noellat married Alain Hudelot later to form Hudelot-Noellat. Charles Noellat died in 1930s and because the domaine owns a few beautiful vineyards such as Richebourg and Romanee-St-Vivant, it attracted Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy who sold one third of interest of Domaine Leroy to Japan’s Takashimaya in exchange of funds to purchase domaine Charles Noellat in 1988 - a move that attributed to the success of Leroy. Though the Domaine was sold, the family kept the rights to the name and original label of the domaine, and nowadays Anne Noellat’s son, Stephan Moreau, uses the the name and label for his unique négociant operation "Charles Noellat" in which he purchases already-bottled wines directly from the cellars of Burgundy producers that have kept older stocks after tasting.
We have sourced a selection of these stocks from 2002 and 2008 and tasted these immediately when they arrived. They give extraordinary price vs quality ratio, you may refer to our tasting notes down below. Our Tasting Notes –
Charles Noellat Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru 2002
Contains lots of dark fruits' elements with closed nose of violet, dark plum and black cherries. It is densely packed with persistent dark fruits' flavours from nose to palate. Excellent in 2-3 hours.
Charles Noellat Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru 2002
Vibrant, attractive aromas of wild berries, red plum and leather. Perfumed and fruity with sharp acidity. It is a very approachable 1er Cru Gevrey-Chambertin to enjoy now and turns up charming in one hour.
Charles Noellat Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru 2008
Bright and expressive nose of dark cherries, underbrush and spices, excellent tension here. Not the most complex example in Vosne-Romanee but gives so much pleasure in drinking.
