Denis Mortet, a figure in Burgundy who has taken part in his father’s vineyard in 1991 and quickly established himself as one of the rising stars in Burgundy, making himself and the domaine a promising player in Gevrey-Chambertin in the 1990s and 2000s. Sadly, his life ended short in 2006 and it is now managed by his son Arnaud.
Everything starts from the vineyard, with much love and effort put into the caring of the vines, their wines are some of the most charming and elegant styles in Gevrey-Chambertin. They make a very unique village wine which is blended from five plots of vineyards and Denis Mortet believes this attains the balance of the village – vinified from En Deree, En Champe, Au Velle, Comde du Dessus and En Motrot.
Mes Cinq Terroirs was made in 2004 and 2005 by Denis Mortet and began by his son Arnaud from 2013. With very positive notes from Jancis Robinson and rated “Outstanding Top value” by Allen Meadows, this is a Burgundy of great value. Here we are pleased to offer you the below from Denis Mortet -
Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs 2014
$480 per bottle (In case of 6*75cl)
17 pts Jancis Robinson, Drink 2019-2027 -
"Some chestnut notes on the nose. Rather charming fruit on the palate. Rich! For 2014 anyway. Lots of structure too. Well done."
89-91pts Allen Meadows “Outstanding Top value” -
"A brooding but notably fresh nose combines notes of various dark berries, humus, earth and distinct sauvage aromas. There is better concentration, weight and volume to the medium-bodied flavors that deliver plenty of punch and minerality on the admirably complex, balanced and lingering finish. This is a quality Gevrey villages."
Apart from “Mes Cinq Terroirs”, here is also another worth considering, the sharply priced Lavaux Saint-Jacques -
Denis Mortet Gevrey Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 2014
$980 per bottle (In case of 6*75cl)
93 pts Allen Meadows “Outstanding” -
Once again there is a background application of oak visible on the intensely earthy and beautifully complex nose of dark berries, fruit, earth, violet and animale scents. There is good size, weight and power to the overtly muscular and stony flavors that possess terrific punch on the firm, youthfully austere and mouth coating finish where a touch of wood emerges. This relatively opulent effort exhibits simply terrific depth and I particularly like the balance here. In a word, impressive.
